CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
The 2007Christian Education Committee offered valuable learning experiences for persons of varied backgrounds and many ages, reaching out to the community and the congregation alike.
Sunday School was led again by Newana Visser/ Superintendent, plus teachers Mary Hall and Jill Gould. Music instruction was led by Bob and Newana Visser. Additionally, a Sunday School class for teens was led by Jan Chambers, Larry Acord, and Lyle Passmore, with Lyle and Mary Janssen volunteering as substitutes.
Children's worship packets, which featured study sheets closely correlated to the weekly sermons, were prepared by Mary and Tom Hall along with Jeannie Hebner.

Children and youth were incorporated into the worship service on numerous occasions in a variety of ways, and on the administrative front, procedures and standards for nursery workers were updated and guidelines for volunteer youth leaders were adopted.

As in past years, numerous special programs and activities were offered for children and young people:

  • the National Souper Bowl of Caring (led by Tom Hall)
  • the Bay City youth annual Confirmation/Commissioning Retreat - the Easter Sunday Children's Sermon and the annual Easter egg hunt
  • recognized graduating seniors and those entering military service - sponsored 3 senior high youth in attending the Presbyterian Tirennium at Purdue University
  • conducted 2007 Vacation Bible School, "Safari Adventure", led by Margaret Derthick, Newana Visser, Jan Chambers, Lyle Passmore, Kaye Wergedal, and Kathy Kohlhas. It involved 51 children in four separate classes, and was greatly appreciated by the community at large.
The Christian Education committee sponsored or participated in:
  • the Ministries Fair
  • the Sunrise Side Cropwalk (led by Jeannie Hebner and Ed Davis)
  • Trunk or Treat Halloween Party
  • a "Meet-and-Greet" dinner for families with young people (which introduced Brian and Shaynee Paauwe as youth leaders)
  • hosted the annual Advent potluck dinner
Many adults again took part in the study groups, coordinated by lay leaders or led by Pastor Vogeley. Classes led by Pastor Vogeley included: a Thursday morning Lenten series, "The Bible Jesus Read," a six-week spring series, "The Bible From Scratch--The New Testament for Beginners," and a seven-week autumn series based upon the award-winning book by Philip Yancey, "The Jesus I Never Knew." Classes directed by lay leaders included a home Bible study on the Book of Ephesians coordinated by Linda and Larry Acord along with Allen Hearn, plus a Women's Bible Study led by Patty Vogeley, "Journey Through the Word," and a winter-spring program which traced major Biblical themes.
The Christian Education Programs that followed the monthly pot-luck dinners consisted of a variety of inter-generational events: January - Patty Vogeley gave an organ demonstration on a Wed. afternoon, February/March (Lenten Study), May - Discovering the Bible Video on the New Testament, June - A talent show entitled ‘Showstoppers!', August - the1st picnic on our new church grounds, recognizing new members with The A.F.C. Band. September - a video entitled - The Face of Jesus in Art, Oct./Nov. The annual "Trunk or Treat"Halloween party, December - an ‘Edible Xmas tree' decorating project plus singing of carols.
Respectfully submitted,
Ed Davis, Chairperson
